Background of the Study
Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are a leading cause of injury and death worldwide, with Nigeria experiencing a high incidence of fatal and non-fatal accidents. Kogi State, located in central Nigeria, has witnessed a significant number of road traffic accidents due to factors such as poor road conditions, unsafe driving practices, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws (Ibrahim & Mohammed, 2024). In response to the alarming number of accidents, road safety campaigns have been implemented by both governmental and non-governmental organizations with the aim of reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities (Tijani & Adeyemi, 2025).
Road safety campaigns in Kogi State have included initiatives such as public awareness programs, the promotion of traffic regulations, and the installation of safety measures like speed bumps and road signs (Rauf & Abubakar, 2023). Despite these efforts, the state continues to experience high rates of road traffic accidents, indicating the need for a deeper investigation into the effectiveness of these campaigns. The impact of road safety campaigns on driver behavior, pedestrian safety, and accident rates in the region has not been comprehensively studied.
Evaluating the effectiveness of road safety campaigns in Kogi State is critical for understanding how well these initiatives address the root causes of traffic accidents and how they can be improved to better reduce road traffic accidents in the state. This research will provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of existing campaigns and recommend strategies for further reducing road traffic accidents in Kogi State.
Statement of the Problem
Road traffic accidents remain a major public health concern in Kogi State, despite the implementation of road safety campaigns. The persistent high accident rates suggest that existing road safety campaigns may not be fully effective in changing driver behavior or reducing accidents. A detailed examination of the impact of these campaigns is needed to identify what strategies are most effective and to suggest improvements for future campaigns.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will evaluate the impact of road safety campaigns on accident rates and road safety behaviors in Kogi State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and analysis of accident records. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the inability to account for all contributing factors to road traffic accidents.
